How much does a domain name really cost?
Less than 14 cents.
I’ve been following interesting domain name news at the DomainTools blog, where I learned that Verisign was hiking their .com prices for wholesalers. Here is the latest tidbit from the blog:
During my recent interview with Karl Auerbach, a former ICANN board member, he told Name Intelligence that Verisign spends less then 14 cents to maintain a domain name in its registry.
Amazing. So what is the price hike for?

Doug, don’t you know anything about the skyrocketing prices of oak conference tables these days, not to mention the going rate required for scantily-clad women to dance upon them? The costs of running a registrar are positively astronomical!
